Since Fall 2023, City of Alameda staff have been in discussions with Alameda Point Collaborative (APC) and MidPen Housing about a new library branch. The proposed 4800 sf library would be located in in the RESHAP (Rebuilding Existing Supportive Housing at Alameda Point) development and have space for public events, study rooms, and tool lending. At the upcoming City Council meeting, our new library director Michael Eitner will update the council and community on the plans and ask the Council to identify funding sources.

We encourage Alamedans to attend the Council meeting or attend via Zoom to show support for the Library’s exciting plans. The meeting is June 4 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall; more information and Zoom registration can be found here.FAL is strongly in favor of a new library at Alameda Point and, if approved by Council, will undertake a fundraising campaign for the new branch.

This summer is full of events and activities for kids, teens, and families, such as MOCHA children’s art workshops at all branches, visits from the Vivarium and Tracy the Animal Show Guy, Italian marionettes, and more! Thanks to the generous contributions from our supporters, FAL is delighted to fund these exceptional activities and we hope to see you all.

June is the 50th anniversary of FAL’s founding! Since 1974, we have been advocating for a vibrant library system in Alameda and we’re grateful to those who founded FAL, many of whom are no longer with us. We want to recognize two who are still part of our community: Kate Quick and Donna Vaughn. Thank you, Kate and Donna, for your vision and service.

We’ll be sponsoring special events all year in recognition of our anniversary and we hope to see you!
