Call for FAL Volunteers!

posted in: News, Ways to Help

We are excited to announce that we have numerous volunteer opportunities opening up with the Friends! Read below to learn about our current needs, and fill out this form to let us know how you’d like to become involved!

In-person volunteer opportunities:

Used Book Sales
The Friends will soon embark on a brand new adventure: On Thursday, February 10, we will open a used book nook in the Main Library! The space will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12-4pm. Help us choose a name for our new venture by voting here.

We will also hold pop-up sales in the Stafford Room of the Main Library on three Saturdays: March 12, April 9, and June 4. And finally, we will return to the O’Club at Alameda Point for our large Used Book Sale on October 21-23, 2022.

There are many different skills and interests that could be applied to these activities, from customer service and sales, to stocking and organizing, to sorting and pricing, and more. Volunteering in our used book nook and at our book sales will be a great way to meet new people, reconnect with friends, and become involved in the Alameda community.

Dewey’s Friends Café
We are thrilled to share that Dewey’s Friends Café at the Main Library will open again on Monday, February 7. New cafe hours will be Mon-Fri, 12-4pm. We are fortunate to have many former café volunteers coming back into the fold, but we would like to train some new volunteers who could be available as substitutes. Shifts will be two hours long, from 12-2pm and 2-4pm, and duties will include serving coffee, tea, soft drinks, and snacks to patrons.

Please note: All in-person volunteers must be masked at all times and fully vaccinated.

Volunteer-from-home opportunities:

Friends @ Home Online Programming
In 2022 we will continue our popular Friends @ Home online programming, which involves producing monthly art docent presentations and author talks. There are many opportunities to become involved in this programming, whether in front of or behind the camera. Are you a bookworm who would enjoy interviewing authors about their latest books? Are you a Zoom whiz who likes to work behind the scenes to ensure that presentations run smoothly? Let us know how you’d like to become involved!

Communications & Public Relations
We are looking to expand our Communication Committee in 2022. Do you have experience with public relations and communications, graphic arts, web development, or social media? Do you enjoy writing or copy editing? Apply your strengths to our Communication Committee and help us spread the word about the important work carried out by the Friends!
